Natural Language Processing

Natural language processing often abbreviated as (NLP) involves developing efficient algorithms as well as mathematical models in order to process texts and make the information easy for the computer applications to understand.

There are several tasks that come under Natural Language Processing and we will go a little into detail for each one.

The first of the tasks is Text to Speech conversion. This can be done using a computer system called speech synthesizer.  By putting together parts of previously recorded speech that already exists in the database, we can create synthesized speech.  Depending upon how easy it is to understand the synthesized speech as well as noticing the resemblance it has to the human voice, we can then determine the quality of the speech.

There are two parts in the text to speech-system. The first one being the front-end which transforms raw text into written words.  Next, the sound is produced by the conversion of symbolic linguistic representation.  This conversion is done by the second part of the speech system known as the back-end.

Secondly Automated Essay Scoring is also part of the Natural Language processing. Wherein advanced programs are used to score essays that are written.  This is a developing technology that is soon going to change the way in which essays are scored in order to provide a more accurate feedback. For this technology to come into action several essays have to be carefully graded by hand. The program will then carefully analyze the details of each essay and then produce a conclusion.

Although the Automated Essay scoring system has changed the way essays are graded, there are still a lot of flaws that it may possess. For instance, the scoring system does not respond so well to creativity, secondly a lot of professors are concerned that students may get demotivated in terms of writing their essay because now they know that no human will read it. Some people are still concerned about the extra cost this system introduces and are thinking twice to implement this new system. However, a lot of companies are working to improve this system in terms of validity and fairness. And many researches have stated that the Automated Essay scoring systems abbreviated as (AES) is able to perform better than a human. These ideas allow us to leap into the future, where we can definitely expect a more advanced world full of technology.
